Dr GILBERT (médecin norvégien pratiquant à Gaza) : Il y a à peine plus d’une heure, les Israéliens ont bombardé le marché d’alimentation central de Gaza, tuant entre 10 et 15 personnes et en blessant une cinquantaine d’autres, À ces patients viennent s’ajouter, au même moment, un grand nombre d’enfants atteints par l’explosion d’une bombe alors qu’ils jouaient sur le toit d’un immeuble à logements. Ces bombardements nocturnes incessants sont véritablement infernaux : les attaques israéliennes ont fait, jusqu’à présent, près de 500 morts et entre 2000 et 2500 victimes, dont la moitié est constituée de femmes et d’enfants.

JOURNALISTE : Votre hôpital manque-t-il de ressources?

Dr GILBERT : Nous pratiquons des chirurgies jour et nuit. Je viens de parler à l’un de mes collègues des services de soins intensifs qui n’a pas fermé l’œil depuis trois jours. L’hôpital est surpeuplé. Dans nos 6 ou 7 salles d’opération, nous nous efforçons de traiter des blessures atroces, inimaginables : des enfants éventrés, des enfants dont les jambes ont été sectionnées, un enfant à qui nous venons d’amputer les bras et les jambes. Tous ces gens n’ont commis aucun crime, si ce n’est d’être des civils palestiniens vivant à Gaza. Avant de penser à envoyer d’autres médecins ou médicaments, il faut exiger, dès maintenant, un cessez-le-feu immédiat. Cette catastrophe n’a que trop duré.

JOURNALISTE : Vous dites soigner des civils, des femmes et des enfants… Mais qu’en est-il des combattants du Hamas?

Dr GILBERT : À dire vrai, depuis notre arrivée la veille du jour de l’An, en matinée, je n’ai vu qu’un seul militaire parmi les dizaines — et même les centaines — de patients que nous avons examinés et traités. Il ne s’agit donc pas, comme certains le prétendent, d’un simple affrontement militaire entre deux armées. C’est plutôt, comme en témoigne le triste bilan des victimes, une guerre sans merci menée contre la population civile palestinienne… Ce peuple pauvre et très jeune, encerclé de toute part, est dans l’incapacité de fuir le théâtre des hostilités, à l’instar d’autres populations en temps de guerre. Les Israéliens bombardent donc un million et demi de personnes prises au piège.

الدكتور جيلبيرت: كنا ولا نزال نجري العمليات الجراحية على مدار الساعة. لقد تكلمت الآن إلى زميلي في قسم غرف عمليات تعمل أيضاً على مدار الساعة وهناك حالات من الجرحى التي لا يشاهد مثلها في أي مكان آخر من العالم. الصغار يأتون وأحشائهم خارج بطونهم وأرجلهم مقطوعة. ولدينا ولد صغير مقطوعة ساقيه وزراعية. حاجتنا الآن ليس فقط المزيد من الأطباء والأدوية. الحاجة الآن هي وقف القصف فوراً. لا يمكن أن يستمر الحال على ما هو الآن. إنها مأساة حقيقية مفجعة.
المراسل: لقد تكلمنا عن المدنيين، الصغار والنساء… ولكن هل يصلكم ضحايا من حماس؟

Dr. GILBERT (a Norwegian doctor working in Gaza): Just a little bit more than an hour ago, the Israelis bombed the central food market in Gaza City and we had a mass influx of about 50 injured and between 10 and 15 killed. At the same time they bombed an apartment house with children playing on the roof and so we had a lot of children also. This is really like Dante’s Inferno. It’s like hell here now and it’s been bombing all night…. close to 500 people have been killed and the number of casualties is reaching two and a half thousand, of which 50% are children and women.

REPORTER: Are your hospitals reaching capacity?

Dr. GILBERT: We have been doing surgery around the clock. I just talked to one of my colleagues in the ICU who has not been sleeping for three days and the hospital is completely overcrowded. We are running 6 to 7 ORs (operating rooms) and there are injuries that you just don’t want to see in this world. Children are coming in with open abdomens and legs cut off. We had a child who had both his legs and arms amputated. Their only crime is being civilians — Palestinians living in Gaza. The relief needed now is not more doctors and more drugs. The relief needed now is to stop the bombing immediately. This can not go on. It is a disaster.

REPORTER: You’ve talked about the civilians, the women and children… but are you also getting casualties that are Hamas fighters?

Dr. GILBERT: To be honest, we came on New Year’s Eve in the morning. I’ve seen one military person among the tens — I mean, hundreds — we have seen and treated. So, anybody who tries to portray this as sort of a clean war against another army are lying. This is an all out war against the civilian Palestinian population in Gaza and we can prove that with the numbers…. This is a poor and very young people who are not able to escape because they cannot flee like other populations can in wartime. They are fenced in a cage…The Israeli forces are bombing one and a half million people locked up in a cage.
