Wal-Future

Today’s news that Detroit may plow under up to 20% of itself to create new farmlands was a sit-up straight shocking eye-opener.

Now, read Corby Kummer’s fascinating article, “The Great Grocery Smackdown:
Will Walmart, not Whole Foods, save the small farm and make America healthy?”

It really raises some interesting questions and points out the ever-graying (or is that greening?) area between Wal-Mart and the rest of the world. Just when you think you can spurn their horrible policies, they adapt and overcome like a corporate-marine juggernaut. Yikes. Or, perhaps, yay. There are a thousands ways to spend Wal-Green jokes, but I’ll leave that to your personal choices of cynical buffoonery.

This change could transform our society. Wal-Mart caters to the lowest common denominator, this is true. But this means they also can influence the least among us. That happens to be the majority at the bottom, otherwise known as the entire base of our society. That shift could significantly alter our whole society — our choices, our habits, our health. The direction of lean and the impact could be positive or negative. Let’s hope, for all our sakes and especially our children’s, that this represents a positive shift.
