Did the New Feminism Go Wrong?

Was reading a ton of articles in honor of International Women’s Day yesterday, when I ran across this one.

Interesting view, which of course, hinges on Madonna. As most of you know, I’m not a fan of Madonna at all. Yet everywhere I turn, much like Paris Hilton and other vapid humans beings, I am forced to look, listen, or think about her. Ugh. I think Madonna isn’t a true role-model — as in a feminist icon or philosophical ideal — though I suppose she might think she is. Madonna is simply an egotistical, attention-hound, an almost fanatically driven person obsessed with fame, power, and money. Part of the Cult of Narcissism of the modern Gecko-culture of Greed Is good and look at me, me, me I’m a star. Madonna is shrewd and simply exploits her own sexuality as means to a goal. It is nothing to do with a feminist philosophy, I think.

But what do I know. I’m a man.

Nevertheless, a fascinating read.

Charlotte Raven explains, “How the ‘new feminism’ went wrong.”

After reading it, ponder the possibilities and discuss amongst yourselves.

I think it is always dangerous to pigeon-hole or say things are black or white, one way or the other. I think the great change that has occurred in modern society is in freedoms, in the breaking down of barriers and the ability to choose, or to move up, down, or sideways. For all people. I think choices are great and people do just about anything nowadays. Women, for instance, can choose any path, from modern to luddite, from educated teacher or doctor to illiterate fundamentalist poly-marriage-enslavement, from family-ist dedication to the other to self-made body-modded porn star liberation. It seems fairly wide open, which is the point.

I think the real problem now is the war between people and corporations. That is the real battleground. Personal liberties versus conformity to the machine.

Blahblahblah.
