Well, this is wholly expected, but sad nevertheless.
Opposition candidate pulls out of Zimbabwe election
HARARE, Zimbabwe — Opposition leader Morgan Tsvangirai today pulled out of this week’s presidential runoff election in Zimbabwe, saying that intensifying violence against activists and supporters had made a free and fair vote impossible.
Tsvangirai said that President Robert Mugabe had made it clear he had no intention of leaving office no matter what the outcome of Friday’s balloting. He called for international intervention to stop the violence so that a fair election could be held.
Human rights groups and independent doctors said in recent days at least 85 opposition supporters had been killed and more than 3,000 injured. Tsvangirai put the death toll at 86 and said 200,000 people had been forced from their homes, 20,000 homes had been destroyed and 10,000 people had been maimed by supporters of the ruling ZANU-PF party.
I wish the UN would do the right thing and follow Morgan Tsvangirai’s advice. The world should use its power to enforce democracy in Zimbabwe before we descend into another preventable Rwandan-style nightmare.
