The Archeology of Children

Had a wonderful event last night.

My youngest son discovered the joy of archeology. He checked out a book on it from his school library and brought it home to show me, since he knows I love history and archeology. It is one of those awesome DK books with fantastic photography. We sat and read through it.

My son was hooked. He couldn’t believe how strange ancient cultures were and all the cool artifacts that come out of the ground. He now wants to dig up our yard and see if our house is built on top of a lost city. He thinks it will be Roman with Egyptian pyramids. I tried to explain the difference in regions, civilizations, etc., related to where we live. Nothing doing. We live on top of an ancient, undiscovered civilization.

Then, before bed, he sat and drew a Viking helmet. It was beautiful and elaborate. Then he decided it would be cooler if it was covered with ancient symbols. So he added Egyptian hieroglyphs and other symbols from Harappan and Sumerian civilizations he found in the book. It now looks like an awesome magical helm from a fantasy novel.

I’m floating today. Feels awesome to have hooked my son on history.
