Anti-Intelligentsia

Wow. Rarely these days do crazies rise so high and soar so dramatically. Michele Bachman is a superstar of the extremists and she proves it yet again by signing a new pledge that she hates every one and every thing, especially Americans — excepting some vaguely mirror-things. The irony, of course, which she will never get, is that she pledges her soul against all non-conformists. For the record, America is a country of non-conformists who refused to kowtow and declared their independence from divine-right conformity. Plus, what would Jesus do? Be Bachmannified on a cross, apparently. Thou shalt not step out of line, you dirty working class Jew.

Bachmann signs anti-porn, anti-sharia pledge

by Justin Elliott

Rep. Michele Bachmann, who in the latest Iowa poll is in a virtual tie with Mitt Romney, used her first TV ad the other day to promise that she will under no circumstances vote to raise the debt ceiling, thus setting the ideological bar that much higher for the rest of the presidential field.

Now she’s done it again. Bachmann just became the first candidate to sign “The Marriage Vow: A Declaration of Dependence Upon Marriage and Family,” a four-page pledge put out by prominent Iowa social conservative Bob Vander Plaats.

The pledge (which comprises two pages of pledge, two pages of endnotes) covers a lot more than just marriage.

There is, for example, this gratuitous reference to slavery in the preface to the pledge:

Slavery had a disastrous impact on African-American families, yet sadly a child born in to slavery in 1860 was more likely to be raised by his mother and father in a two-parent household than was an African- American baby born after the election of the USA’s first African-American President.

A signator must promise a strong stand against polyandry:

Vigorous opposition to any redefinition of the Institution of Marriage – faithful monogamy between one man and one woman – through statutory-, bureaucratic-, or court-imposed recognition of intimate unions which are bigamous, polygamous, polyandrous, same-sex, etc.

Then there’s this reference to “Sharia Islam” (which is not, for the record, an actual thing):

Rejection of Sharia Islam and all other anti-woman, anti-human rights forms of totalitarian control.

Lest you may think a guy like Vander Plaats might be hostile to gay people and feminists, a footnote on this item elaborates that “Over the long run, Sharia polygamy, multi-partner childbearing, demographic jihad and the persecution of Jews, Christians, blacks, artists, feminists, gays, freethinkers and other non-conformists poses a threat to Western human rights in general, and to American liberty in particular.”

The pledge, which is really worth reading in full, also includes a reference to protecting children from “all forms of pornography” that could arguably be read as an endorsement of a porn ban. The whole thing is here (.pdf).

Unbelievable that these kooks declare life for a slave child to be better in 1860 than today. Lets repeat:

a child born in to slavery in 1860 was more likely to be raised by his mother and father in a two-parent household than was an African- American baby born after the election of the USA’s first African-American President.

Reality has nothing to do with their warped worldview. Slave families were separated and sold to be better controlled, for one, and secondly, the definition of a slave includes “non-householding.” Give me a freaking break. Yet, they would rather return to the “Good Old Days” of wondrous slavery and sparkling whippings. Ahhh, yes, let us all sip mint juleps on the front poh-orch while the coons pick cotton.

This is extremely dangerous looney tunes time. But it all times in together. A few dangerous religious fundamentalists who hate all “non-conformists” and blacks and browns and yellows and anything else “foreign” or un-Evangelical, like muslims, hindus, buddhists, baha’is, jains, Orthodoxists, Catholics, Mormons, etc., want to take over and return the world to a magical past of Fundamentalist Ten Commandmentism and strict original, set-in-stone Constitutionalism. You remember the original Constitution, the document which enshrined slavery. Before some of our children refused to conform and we all split apart in that nasty old Civil War divorce, in those comforting, Bible story-laden days of yore when the happy sin-less Family (because wifey Eve knew her damned place and if she didn’t there was always some neighbors in Salem who could explain it to her) just rocked and clapped in front of the Wall Street slavery auction block and smiled as white as a skull.

Yeah, the Good Old Days like that.

Please, God, teach history and critical thinking once more.
